Walter Scott Monument: Guided Tour

One of the largest monuments to a writer anywhere in the world, the Walter Scott Monument is unmissable. You’ll find it in the heart of the city, on Edinburgh’s bustling Princes Street.

Built in 1840, this gothic beauty is just one piece of the fascinating puzzle in Edinburgh’s rich historical past. So why not climb the monument, enjoy unrivalled views across the city, soak up the history with a guided tour and gain a deeper understanding of this iconic city landmark?

Guided tours run every 30 minutes take place in small groups. Together, you’ll climb the 200 foot monument, taking each floor at a time. The first stop is the Museum room on the first floor. Here, you'll find out all about how the city of Edinburgh came together following the death of Walter Scott in 1832 and agreed to construct a monument for the famous literary figure. Our tour guide explained the history of the life and times of Scott himself, as well as how the gothic monument we know today came to be.

Take a moment to catch your breath before ascending the next 2 floors.

The stairs do get a wee bit narrow towards the top, so this isn’t one for the faint hearted! It is certainly worth the climb however. At the top, you’ll be greeted with amazing panoramic views all around the city. Spot famous city landmarks such as Arthur’s Seat, the Balmoral hotel, the monuments of Calton Hill and follow the horizon all the way to the Firth of Forth.

Back down to earth and you'll spot a statue of Sir Walter Scott nestled within the monument itself. It makes for a fab picture!

Tickets cost £8 for adults, £6 for OAPs, students of children or £20 for families. Guided tours run every half an hour from 10am until 3:30pm every day. There’s no need to book ahead but during busier periods you may have a little wait.
